What I’m about!!

Hey, welcome to my blog!

I’m Alex, well actually… my name is Alexandra Berube, but, I’m more of an Alex.

I’m 20-years-old and this is my journey through life on wheels and how I’m just like any other young adult. I am apart of Make-A-Wish Believe board of directors and many other organizations.

You’re probably wondering why I can’t walk.
Well, I have Transverse Myelitis. I became paralyzed very suddenly in 2012. Before then, I was healthy, I could run, skip, dance, and jump. Perfectly normal. Perfectly healthy.

Since I’ve become paralyzed I have been diagnosed with several other disorders (or whatever you want to call them) and I’ve endured over 30 surgeries and more time in the hospital than at home.

I have survived septic shock 3 times and sepsis 6 times!
I may have some problems but trust me, that isn’t all that I am!

So here is my blog. Sit back and enjoy the ride through my struggles, my ups and downs and everything in between! 🙂

  1. Hi Alex, I came because I saw this link on your Instagram and also because you are my inspiration. I have severe scoliosis on my therasic and lumbar spine. That was always the problem with me until they found a hotspot on one of my joints. The doctor discovered it was a tumor (ostioide ostioma) in my spine. I am having a full wedge bi-opsy and fusion on December 17 and I am super excited to get fixed!!! Well anyways I just thought I should let you know that I think you are such a strong girl to put up with this and I can garentee one of these days, you will walk again. Good luck Alex and I hope the surgery helps! 🙂

  2. Hey Alex!! I’m @daydreamer1726 on insta. I found ur blog, and have been hooked!!! You are a real inspiration to a lot of people. I don’t have TM, but I really enjoy learning about it and your story. Stay strong, and good luck on your recovery!!!!! Lots of love, Sophie 💪😎♿️

  3. Hi Alex!
I’m not surprised to see you helping others through your own journey. You were remarkable in first grade and I see things haven’t changed. You are in my daily thoughts and prayers! Keep up the positive attitude. I’m so proud of you!
    Love, Mrs. Goodwin

  4. Hey Alex, Superintendent Quesnel sent us an email with your inspiring story. I’ve already voted. I’m a father of a son in college & you’ve made me realize more than ever how precious he is. What you’ve done on this journey so far is wonderful. Know that you help not just the your peers, but all of us to focus on family first. I will be following your journey & say hi from time to time. I wish you god speed as you heal. You inspire.

  5. Hey Alex,

I caught your story on the Front Page of Yahoo News. I think your journey is beyond courageous and remarkable. I am currently doing a documentary about children and teenagers who have been diagnosed with rare diseases and terminal cancer, and their journey in trying to fulfill their bucket list. I think you would be a great fit for the documentary, and you surely could inspire so many others who have probably stopped living. Below is a teaser trailer to the documentary which is called “Before I die…”

If you’re interested in being a part of it please feel free to email me at richardbakewell@mac.com.

      1. Glad that you definitely want to be a part of it. Talk to your mom and see what she says. Have her reach out to me first and then we can go from there.

      1. Hey there. Hope you have been well. Yes I am still looking for people for my doc, and would love to talk to you and your mom about everything. Why don’t you talk to your mom about it, and show her the trailer, and have her email me.

      2. Hey, I am so sorry I haven’t contacted you again. We decided we will have to pass on this, I am sorry! I’m having surgery on Monday and just lots of things going on. I really appreciate the offer again.. Thank you!

  6. Alex …you are a blessing and an inspiration to many. I wish you the best and success in all your efforts. My late husband and your Grandpa Joe were very good friends. Because of that connection I have been so concerned for you. I am so proud of you and your positive attitude. I wish you happiness in your new life. Rita Surdyka

  7. Alex you are a very beautiful and inspiring young lady. I would give anything if my daughter Mandy could communicate with you since you remind me of her and you are about the same age. Unfortunately she suffered a blood clot 3 days after her TM paralysis set in at age 15 and caused a pulmonary embolism and cardiac arrest 3 times in 2 hours. She has been unable to communicate ever since. I swear she is still in there by the way she looks at me and it breaks my heart that I can’t do more to bring her out. I am going to start reading your blogs to her. If you would like to read her story, it is at https://www.gofundme.com/dfeu2c and her website http://www.music4mandy.com. May God bless you Alex.

    1. Thank you so much and my thoughts and prayers are with your daughter & your whole family. Keep talking to her, I believe I’ve heard of her story before actually! So heartbreaking, I wish I could help in some way! I am so honored you’re going to read my blogs to her, I really appreciate it. Love to you!!
